Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) helps you build practical skills to manage emotions, strengthen relationships and create a life aligned with your values
The word “dialectical” means bringing together two ideas that may seem opposite. In DBT, those two ideas are:
DBT teaches that your feelings and behaviors often make sense based on your past experiences and current struggles.
A therapist works to create a safe, non-judgmental environment where you feel understood and supported.
At the same time, DBT also focuses on helping you build healthier habits and coping skills.
You learn practical tools to:
manage emotions
handle stress
improve relationships
reduce harmful behaviors
create a more fulfilling life
Mindfulness:
Learning to control your attention and stay anchored in the "present moment" rather than obsessing over the past or worrying about the future.
Interpersonal Effectiveness:
Gaining tools to start new relationships, improve current ones, or healthily end bad ones.
Emotion Regulation:
Understanding what emotions are, how they function, and how to experience them without being overwhelmed.
Distress Tolerance:
Learning to tolerate emotional pain without resorting to self-destructive behaviors.
Stage I: Moving from being out of control to in control. The focus here is on reducing life-threatening behaviors and anything that interferes with therapy. Discover practical strategies you can use in your daily life.
Stage II: Moving from "quiet desperation" to experiencing emotions fully. We help you process trauma without shutting down. Practicing in session and in between sessions.
Stage III: Building a life by solving everyday problems like career goals or relationship conflicts. See progress, build self-trust, and feel more in control.
Stage IV: Moving from incompleteness to a sense of meaning, connection, and purpose aligned with your values
The goal of DBT is to help you create a life that feels meaningful, balanced, and worth living. For some people, that may mean succeeding in school or work, building healthier relationships, managing overwhelming emotions, or simply getting through each day without feeling constantly anxious, depressed, or emotionally exhausted. DBT focuses on helping individuals develop practical coping skills while also feeling understood, supported, and accepted throughout the healing process.
